The True Threat of AI Lies in the "Unknown Unknowns", Says Tsinghua Professor

Jun. 27, 2024  02:50

AsianFin--Xue Lan, Director of Institute of AI International Governance of Tsinghua University, emphasized that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems should not simply aim for greater power, during the 15th Annual Meeting of the New Champions at the World Economic Forum.

He pointed out that AI risks include "unknown unknowns," which are particularly frightening. Therefore, the two "wheels" of AI development and governance must advance in tandem.

Discussing the topic of AI replacing human jobs, Xue noted that this wave of AI might indeed be different. For a considerable period, AI could potentially replace more jobs than it creates. Consequently, policies should assist workers in industries at risk of being replaced to transition to new roles. Additionally, society must consider how to create new employment opportunities.
